About the position

The Junior Data Scientist at UCLA's Advancement Technology Services team will leverage big data analytics to enhance donor engagement and fundraising efforts for research, teaching, and patient care. This role focuses on large-scale data integration and supports decision-making in key areas such as fundraising and digital marketing. The position involves working with various data sources, developing custom data models, and ensuring the data lake on AWS is equipped with the necessary analytics tools and infrastructure for scalable machine learning applications.

Responsibilities

  • Support decision-making in fundraising, digital marketing, and constituent relationship management.
  • Integrate large-scale data from various sources, including patient databases and fundraising CRM.
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to drive fundraising results.
  • Ensure the data lake on AWS is equipped with big data analytics tools and efficient data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of CRM and Data Projects and other business units to improve fundraising capabilities.
  • Visualize and present data insights to stakeholders using tools like D3, QuickSight, and Tableau.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of experience in analytical, statistical, and programming skills to analyze large data sets.
  • Proficiency in statistical computer languages such as Python, R, and SQL; coding experience in C#, Java, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques including GLM/Regression, Random Forest, and Decision Trees.
  • Experience with relational and no-SQL databases, including SQL Server and T-SQL programming.
  • Ability to analyze data from third-party providers like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights.
  • Familiarity with distributed data/computing tools such as MapReduce, Hadoop, and Spark.
  • Experience in developing custom data models and visualizing data for stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and their application in problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with AWS services in Analytics and Machine Learning, including QuickSight and RedShift.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in software application and API development.
  • Proven ability to provide technical advice on business intelligence issues.
  • Strong writing skills for technical specifications and user documentation.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills for effective teamwork and conflict resolution.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to perform thorough functional analysis and systems research.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field.
