About the position

The Digital Modernization Group at Leidos is seeking a Junior Network Systems Engineer intern to support the Global Solutions Management - Operations II (GSM-O II) contract. This contract is focused on the Operations, Sustainment, Maintenance, Repair, and Defense of the Defense Information System Network (DISN) within the Department of Defense Information Network (DODIN), in collaboration with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). The position is based onsite at Fort Meade, MD, and requires the intern to engage in various network operations and engineering tasks critical to the mission of providing reliable IP messaging and communications transport services. As a Junior Network Systems Engineer intern, you will be involved in a range of activities that include network integration testing, security engineering, service management, and information assurance. The role is designed for candidates who are eager to learn and develop their skills in network encryption methodologies, system hardening, lifecycle systems sustainment, change management, configuration management, and continuous service improvements (CSI). You will work closely with experienced network engineers to enhance system performance and security, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of Tactics Techniques and Procedures (TTP) documents. The internship will provide hands-on experience in troubleshooting deployed network devices, performing technical maintenance on routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers, and implementing secure communications configurations. This role is ideal for motivated individuals who are currently enrolled in a relevant academic program and are looking to gain practical experience in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with network integration, testing, security engineering, and implementation configuration support.
  • Collaborate with network engineers to improve system performance and security.
  • Employ a combination of technical and functional expertise to recommend solutions to satisfy customer technical and service management requirements.
  • Assist in development of Tactics Techniques and Procedures (TTP) documents.
  • Support system performance tuning and enhancements.
  • Support troubleshooting of deployed, hardened network end devices.
  • Participate in engineering meetings to bridge the gap between operations and engineering.
  • Perform technical maintenance on network devices including routers, switches, firewalls and load balancers.
  • Implement and test secure communications configurations.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's-granting program in a relevant discipline is required for consideration.
  • Familiarization with IT and Computer networking concepts (Microsoft Office, OSI Model, Python, VBA, SQL).
  • Ability to perform data entry tasks and run appropriate queries and utilize pivot tables to display, perform analysis, assess trends.
  • Interact with customers and other teams when responding to customer taskings.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret clearance; Interim Secret required to start (selected candidates will be sponsored for required clearance).
  • Must be a US Citizen to qualify.
  • Local colleges nearby Fort Meade (National Capital Region (NCR)) need only apply.
  • Work must be performed on Fort Meade Maryland.
  • Must have own transportation to enter Fort Meade.
  • To be considered for this internship, candidates must not have graduated prior to May 2025. Candidates must be actively enrolled in a degree plan that extends into fall 2025.
  • Ability to obtain CompTIA Security+ certification or equivalent DoD 8570 IAT II certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of encryption concepts and devices.
  • Practical understanding of enterprise WAN principles.
  • Entry level knowledge of Network and Security architecture, network topology, IT device integrity, and common security elements.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering and troubleshooting networks, including routing, and switching experience such as one or more of the following: MPLS, VPNs, routing protocols i.e. BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, switching protocols i.e. Spanning Tree Protocol, VLANs, LLDP, VoIP, Multicast protocols and emerging network technologies.
  • Entry-Level understanding and knowledge of IP network/subnet addressing.
  • Effective written and oral communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative in grasping large scale enterprise network solution implementation.
  • Willingness to adapt to team dynamics in support of senior military, government civilian and contractors.
