The Fassett laboratory at the UCSF-Parnassus Campus is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic recent college graduate to join our team as a Junior/Assistant Research Specialist. Founded in spring 2023, our growing research group focuses on T cell biology and allergic inflammation in various tissues, including skin, lungs, and gut. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Marlys Fassett, a physician-scientist and dermatologist whose research spans in vitro molecular immunology, neuroimmunology, and mouse models of inflammatory disease. In this role, the ideal candidate will be expected to have completed relevant coursework in neuroscience, immunology, or molecular biology. While hands-on research experience in immunology is preferred, the position will provide ample opportunity for learning and development. Key experimental techniques that the candidate will be expected to learn and perform include mouse and human tissue processing, flow cytometry, mouse husbandry, and other animal procedures. Additionally, up to 10% of the candidate's time will be dedicated to general lab support tasks such as ordering and receiving supplies. The laboratory is committed to supporting the candidate in developing sufficient skills and autonomy to drive an independent research sub-project. Depending on prior experience and interest, the candidate's project may involve experiments utilizing immunofluorescence microscopy, analysis of RNA-sequencing data, or the development of novel assays to model the relationship between sensory nerves and other skin cell types in vitro. Appointees in the Specialist series are expected to engage in specialized research and professional activities without teaching responsibilities, contributing to scientific and scholarly advancements while potentially participating in University and Public Service activities. Candidates appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree or equivalent research experience, while those at the Assistant rank must have a master's degree or a bachelor's degree with three or more years of research experience. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in flow cytometry, in vitro cell differentiation assays, and other core immunology techniques. Candidates must meet all required qualifications at the time of appointment, and their CV must clearly state qualifications or indicate if they are pending.
