About the position

The Junior Programmer position at Columbia University is a vital role within the Healthcare Innovations Research and Evaluation (HIRE) program. Reporting directly to the Director, the Junior Programmer will collaborate closely with the research team to support various initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare innovations. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to meaningful research while developing their programming and analytical skills in a dynamic environment. In this role, the Junior Programmer will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day functions of the HIRE group. This includes performing data analysis using programming languages such as R and Python, as well as maintaining databases to ensure their integrity and usability. The Junior Programmer will also assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication and contribute to grant writing efforts. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively in a diverse research setting. The ideal candidate will possess strong quantitative skills and demonstrate critical thinking abilities. They should be well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently as well as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential for collaborating with team members and stakeholders. Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day functions of the HIRE group
  • Perform data analysis using R, Python, and other coding languages

Requirements

  • Two years of training in computer sciences at college or technical school or equivalent and at least six months experience
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solver with ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Well-organized, self-starter needed with strong attention to details and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proactive, extremely organized and able to multitask in a diverse research environment

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages with preference given to R, Python and/or C++
  • Experience in modeling or statistics or computer coding
  • Experience in programming, scientific analyses, and publication
