About the position

The United Nations International School (UNIS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced full-time Junior School Visual Arts Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. This position is integral to fostering a creative and inclusive learning environment for students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in visual arts education, demonstrating extensive teaching experience with young learners. The role requires a compassionate and responsible approach, emphasizing collaboration with parents and faculty to enhance the educational experience of students. UNIS teachers are expected to be open-minded, reflective, and passionate about promoting student growth and learning, aligning with the UNIS Mission and Guiding Principles. In this role, the teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering high-quality, student-centered learning experiences that are engaging, inquiry-based, and aligned with the UNIS curriculum and standards. The teacher will manage classrooms effectively, implement strategies to support students' behavioral needs, and provide detailed feedback on academic performance. Additionally, the teacher will collaborate with colleagues to develop effective learning experiences and communicate regularly with parents regarding their child's academic, social, and emotional development. The position also involves participation in special arts events and exhibitions, promoting the importance of art within the school community. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Arts and the Junior School Principal, and will be expected to attend various meetings, including weekly department and faculty meetings, to ensure alignment with school policies and practices. This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the teacher will be expected to fulfill additional duties as assigned, including supervision during non-instructional times and participation in school events.

Responsibilities

  • Teach visual arts classes to students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4 in the Junior School.
  • Supervise students during non-instructional time and attend curriculum and grade level meetings.
  • Incorporate the UNIS Mission into planning and interactions with the school community.
  • Manage classrooms effectively and follow school procedures.
  • Collaborate with school leaders and administrators to enforce school policies.
  • Design and deliver high-quality, student-centered learning experiences that are engaging and inquiry-based.
  • Implement strategies in the classroom to support age-appropriate students' behavioral needs.
  • Work collaboratively with students to establish and enforce classroom rules.
  • Help students set goals and assess their performance.
  • Provide detailed feedback to students about their academic performance and strategies for improvement.
  • Help organize and deliver the advisory program to students if required.
  • Chaperone school events and supervise common areas between classes.
  • Attend Back-to-School Nights and Parent/Teacher Conferences to present programs to families.
  • Plan and participate in special arts events and exhibitions within the school.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required (Master's Degree preferred).
  • Extensive experience in Visual Arts education.
  • Experience in a K-12 educational environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, patience, and a sense of humor.
