About the position

The Junior Science Writer/Editor position at Kelly Government Solutions involves supporting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by researching, writing, and editing content that communicates scientific information to a lay audience. This role is essential for promoting NHLBI research initiatives and requires strong writing skills, the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible language, and collaboration with various stakeholders. The position is a long-term contract with a hybrid work arrangement, primarily based in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Research, write and edit news items for a lay audience, including press releases, articles, and blog posts.
  • Review and provide comments on scientific manuscripts and evaluate them for promotion potential.
  • Translate complex scientific information into plain language for various audiences.
  • Disseminate information and promote NHLBI-produced products through multiple communication channels.
  • Advise NHLBI staff on communication opportunities and strategies.
  • Develop and implement communication plans for specific NHLBI initiatives.
  • Respond to media inquiries and provide accurate background information on NHLBI activities.
  • Identify appropriate NHLBI staff for media interactions and advise on handling media calls.
  • Collaborate with other Institutes/Centers and agencies to ensure effective communication of research findings.
  • Establish and maintain contact with NHLBI subject matter experts for news placement and scientific advice.
  • Proofread documents for scientific and technical accuracy before submission.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Communications, Public Health, Biology, or related discipline.
  • Strong writing and editing skills to translate health and scientific information for various audiences.
  • Experience in planning and supporting communications activities with knowledge of best practices.
  • Project management skills to set priorities, develop work plans, and monitor progress.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority projects in a deadline-oriented environment.
