About the position

We are in search of a Junior Substation Civil/Structural Engineer to join our diverse and fast-paced organization. As a core team member, you will be interacting with other electric utility disciplines, playing a valuable part in leading and designing high voltage utility Civil Substation projects. This position offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing for 2-3 days a week in the office, with additional location options including Portland, OR, Walled Lake, MI, Houston, TX, and Orlando, FL. The candidate must have a strong educational background in the design of steel structures, concrete structures, geotechnical engineering, and foundations. Experience with substation structure design, rigid bus design, foundation design, site development, oil spill containment design, and design of retaining walls, masonry control shelters, and fire-walls is a plus. This position will involve direct design of civil/structural components in support of the development of bid/construction packages for substation projects. You will primarily perform design calculations and develop construction-grade engineering design drawings regularly, under the supervision of a licensed civil engineer. Site visits to client substation facilities are expected, along with occasional travel for client meetings and industry-related events. Compliance with quality control and safe work practices is essential, as is maintaining compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget expectations. This position will be a member of a design team comprised of engineers, designers, and drafting technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with other electric utility disciplines to lead and design high voltage utility Civil Substation projects.
  • Perform design calculations and develop construction-grade engineering design drawings.
  • Conduct site visits to client substation facilities as part of the work.
  • Travel occasionally for client meetings and industry-related events.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control and safe work practices.
  • Maintain compliance with project scope, schedule, and budget expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil-Structural Engineering.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Mathcad software.
  • Experience with STAAD.Pro, FAD, SAFE, SAG10, and LPile software preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microstation, and Civil 3D software preferred.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with substation structure design and foundation design.
  • Experience with oil spill containment design and design of retaining walls.
  • Experience with design of masonry control shelters and fire-walls.
