About the position

The Linux/Windows Operator / Jr. System Administrator at MITRE is responsible for providing critical support to the R&D Labs by managing core infrastructure components. This role involves troubleshooting and configuring Linux and Windows systems, managing user accounts, and supporting lab environments. The position offers an opportunity to collaborate with senior IT system architects and develop system administration skills in a dynamic and innovative workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Constant communication with Senior staff and customers.
  • Conduct Windows NESSUS scans and system patching.
  • Provision virtual machines and perform bare-metal OS installations with RedHat and CentOS Linux / Windows.
  • Provide lab customer and end user support.
  • Add, remove, and modify local and centralized user accounts/identities.
  • Acknowledge, categorize, and provide basic triage for incoming tickets.
  • Support physical configuration on lab floors, including rearranging lab consoles, workstations, and cabling.
  • Provide data center operations support, including server tagging, racking, network patching, and cable management.
  • Monitor computer systems and network resources, performing basic troubleshooting as needed.
  • Provide basic Linux OS support, including user environments, dotfiles, X/Wayland configs, ssh, and yum installs/updates.
  • Ensure on-site and remote backup and restore systems are operational.

Requirements

  • Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux / CentOS, Shell, Perl and/or Python scripting, and general system administration tasks.
  • Experience administering VMware ESX 6 instances of Linux and Windows hosts/VMs.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of FIPS-199, NIST SP800-53 rev.4, NIST SP800-171, and DISA STIGs is a plus.
