About The Position

A Juvenile Detention Officer (JDO) provides direct care to juveniles detained in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center (MCJDC). JDO's provide facility security through ongoing supervision of juveniles. An employee in this class instructs and supervises juveniles in vocational, academic, recreational, and daily personal hygiene activities and maintains accurate records of juvenile behavior.

Requirements

  • Have completed thirty (30) semester hours of college-level course work from an accredited college or university (or equivalent quarter hours); preferably in Criminal Justice, Human Service, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Child Development, Corrections, or related field.
  • OR have a High School Diploma/GED AND a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience in a juvenile facility, Child Caring Institution (CCI) or other Department of Child Welfare Licensed facility or a minimum of 2 years demonstrated work experience with youth ages 10 - 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care to juveniles detained in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Ensure facility security through ongoing supervision of juveniles.
  • Instruct and supervise juveniles in vocational, academic, recreational, and daily personal hygiene activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of juvenile behavior.
