About the position

The Juvenile Detention Officer I position is an entry-level role responsible for providing direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility. The officer ensures the health, safety, and welfare of each youth while complying with departmental policies and procedures. This role involves counseling, crisis management, and enforcing facility rules, as well as participating in educational and recreational activities for the youths.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day direct supervision to youths in a 24-hour detention facility.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of each youth in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to promote personal awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Make critical judgments during crisis situations and inform supervisors of problems encountered.
  • Document actions taken during incidents and behaviors of youths.
  • Discipline youths by enforcing facility rules and documenting behavior.
  • Serve as back-up to staff and perform necessary duties such as administering medications and transporting youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertaining programs and activities.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification as required by applicable standards for the facility/department within six months of employment.
  • Possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Pass an extensive background investigation and mandatory drug testing prior to employment.
