About the position

The City of Murfreesboro is seeking a Canine (K-9) Trainer to join the Murfreesboro Police Department. This full-time position is open to current POST certified officers and requires expertise in law enforcement canine training techniques. The trainer will be responsible for the selection, training, and maintenance of K-9 units, ensuring they are prepared for various duties including narcotic detection and patrol work. The role emphasizes community safety and law enforcement duties, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other officers and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively in spoken and written English to ensure safe operations.
  • Patrol assigned zones and interact with citizens.
  • Respond to calls for service and prevent, detect, and investigate criminal activity.
  • Enforce state and federal laws, city ordinances, and issue citations.
  • Assist other officers in active investigations and document calls, file reports, and prepare case files for judicial proceedings.
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects, and issue search warrants.
  • Prepare court cases and communicate with the district attorney's office, appearing in court to testify.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment and attend training sessions.
  • Provide security at community events and maintain records on K9 use including training and deployments.
  • Coordinate veterinarian care and maintain training records for K9 teams.

Requirements

  • Must be a current POST certified officer with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time experience as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer or equivalent certification.
  • Background in law enforcement canine training techniques such as obedience training, patrol work, and narcotic detection.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience or certification as a School Resource Officer is encouraged but not required.
