About the position

The Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III position at the Texas Department of Transportation involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work for fleet vehicles and equipment within the Fleet Operations Division. The role requires independent work on various assignments, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. The position also includes responsibilities for training less experienced technicians and leading teams, particularly at the Equipment Mechanic II and III levels.

Responsibilities

  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Train less experienced technicians (Equipment Mechanic II and III).
  • Travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required (Equipment Mechanic II).
  • Lead and train less experienced technicians and perform duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence (Equipment Mechanic III).

Requirements

  • Experience in automotive service and repair, particularly with fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret diagnostic equipment information.
  • Proficiency in completing repair order paperwork and data entry into management systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance and inspection procedures for motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems and electronic ignitions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in automotive service technology or related field.
  • Experience with computerized diagnostic systems.
  • Leadership experience in a technical environment.
