About the position

The General Transportation Technician position involves performing routine transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance, equipment operation, and traffic control. The role requires interaction with the public and local law enforcement during emergencies, and it encompasses a range of responsibilities from basic maintenance tasks to skilled inspections and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Performs basic welding as needed.
  • Provides support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assists stranded motorists.
  • Handles traffic control by placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades, and flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves them as necessary.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way, performs roadway repairs, and erects/repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris, mows rights-of-way, and performs landscape maintenance.
  • Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, and street sweepers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI) and routine servicing on equipment, completing required reports.
  • Cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, and assists the public during emergencies such as floods and snowstorms.
  • Inspects maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship for compliance with plans and specifications.

Requirements

  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair operations.
  • Ability to operate light and heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Basic welding skills and knowledge of traffic control standards.
  • Experience in providing public assistance during emergencies.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment operation such as motor graders and excavators.
  • Knowledge of construction project inspection and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with survey instruments and techniques.
