About the position

Kapa'a Middle School is seeking a compassionate and skilled Special Education Teacher to lead a fully self-contained classroom (FSC) for students with diverse and sometimes medically fragile learning needs. The ideal candidate will provide individualized instruction, support, and advocacy to ensure the academic, social, and emotional success of middle school students with disabilities. This position requires a commitment to implementing successful middle school practices as outlined in "The Successful Middle School: This We Believe" by the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). The school is dedicated to building a strong foundation for students by fostering character, confidence, and compassion, and expects all staff to commit to these successful middle school practices. The Special Education Teacher will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs and abilities of each student. They will design and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons aligned with state standards and IEP goals, utilizing evidence-based practices and specialized instructional strategies to address diverse learning styles and support student growth. The teacher will create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes independence, self-advocacy, and positive behavior, while fostering positive relationships with students and families. Collaboration is key in this role, as the teacher will work closely with general education teachers, support staff, and related service providers to facilitate inclusive practices and maximize student outcomes. Regular communication with parents/guardians will be essential to provide updates on student progress and promote family engagement. The teacher will also participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, IEP conferences, and professional development activities to ensure coordinated and comprehensive support for students. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Special Education Teacher will engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance instructional strategies, behavior management techniques, and assistive technology integration. They will collaborate with colleagues to share resources, strategies, and expertise in supporting students with disabilities in a middle school setting. This position is vital in ensuring that Kapa'a Middle School continues to provide a positive and inclusive school culture where all students feel safe, valued, and respected.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs and abilities of each student.
  • Design and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons aligned with state standards and IEP goals.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and specialized instructional strategies to address diverse learning styles and support student growth.

  • Foster positive relationships with students and families, serving as an advocate for students' academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Provide ongoing assessment, feedback, and academic interventions to monitor progress and promote student success.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and related service providers to facilitate inclusive practices and maximize student outcomes.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on student progress, discuss strategies for support, and promote family engagement.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, IEP conferences, and professional development activities to ensure coordinated and comprehensive support for students.
  • Stay informed about best practices in special education, middle school education, and adolescent development.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance instructional strategies, behavior management techniques, and assistive technology integration.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share resources, strategies, and expertise in supporting students with disabilities in a middle school setting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (required); Master's degree preferred.
  • Valid special education teaching license or certification.
  • Experience working with middle school-aged students with disabilities, including those with diverse needs and behavioral challenges.
  • Strong understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices in inclusive education.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
