The Security and Privacy Heterogeneous Environment for Reproducible Experimentation (SPHERE) is a newly funded NSF mid-scale research infrastructure being developed by the USC Information Sciences Institute and Northeastern University Khoury College of Computer Sciences. This innovative research infrastructure aims to provide access to a diverse array of hardware, software, and resources pertinent to cybersecurity and privacy research. It will be interconnected through a user-configurable network substrate and safeguarded by a set of security policies tailored to meet the unique needs of cybersecurity and privacy research. We are seeking a research engineer to contribute to the development of this cutting-edge cyberinfrastructure. The segment of SPHERE being established at Northeastern University will concentrate on experimentation with Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The primary objective is to create the largest remotely-accessible IoT testbed globally, featuring a wide variety of IoT devices from multiple categories, such as smart speakers, smart TVs, and smart cameras, among others. This IoT testbed will not only host these devices but will also offer programming interfaces that allow users to interact with them through various modalities, including physical access, companion app access, and voice access. These interfaces will be designed for remote access, enabling users to conduct experiments from anywhere in the world without the need to purchase devices or construct their own infrastructure. Additionally, the IoT testbed will be equipped with tools for capturing network traffic generated by these devices, securely storing their data, integrating with the broader SPHERE research infrastructure, and facilitating automated and repeatable experiments at scale. This position presents a unique opportunity for an individual to join our dynamic team and engage in groundbreaking research that supports scalable, large-scale virtual access to diverse IoT hardware. The position is based on-site at the Boston campus.
