About the position

The Construction Technician-Line Worker is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining telecommunications infrastructure, including poles, cables, and conduits. This role involves working with both aerial and underground cables, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and maintaining material inventory. The position requires physical labor, including climbing poles and operating heavy machinery, and may involve travel and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain poles and cables.
  • Install aerial cables (fiber and copper) and set up service for customers.
  • Measure signal strength at utility poles using electronic test equipment.
  • Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results.
  • Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes using bucket trucks or climbing poles.
  • String cables between structures and pull lines to proper tension using jacks and hoists.
  • Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks.
  • Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduits.
  • Use various construction equipment to complete installations, such as digger derricks and bucket trucks.
  • Dig trenches for underground wires or cables.
  • Understand staking sheets and blueprints.
  • Perform work in accordance with industry standards and safety procedures.
  • Prepare engineering field notes and interpret telecom facilities in records and maps.
  • Participate in engineering, permit, and construction processes as required.
  • Perform routine maintenance and recognize route issues for repair.

Requirements

  • 5 or more years of experience in outside plant construction.
  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Pole Climbing Certifications.
  • Proficient at operating various construction equipment.
  • 1 year of outside plant construction experience or Trade School certification in lieu of experience.
  • Pole climbing certification.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a CDL.
  • Ability to pass DOT certification.
  • Exceptional time-management and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with fiber optic and copper cable splicing.
  • Knowledge of RUS standards and design engineers' instructions.
