About the position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings. With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. Responsibilities

  • Implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
  • Work a full duty day in the assigned location.
  • Assess student abilities related to educational goals and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction/learning strategies and activities.
  • Manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and other parts of the site.
  • Communicate instructional expectations and student progress to students and parents.
  • Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Participate in planning effective instructional goals and curriculum with other program personnel.
  • Engage in professional growth and development activities.
  • Assist in documenting student progress by maintaining and submitting records and reports.
  • Ensure the classroom environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
  • Participate in IEP meetings for IDEA students.
  • Maintain knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Study and learn current research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and peers.
  • Take attendance and keep attendance registers according to Board policy.
  • Follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

Requirements

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade assigned.
  • Good knowledge of early childhood program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability to perform required work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to monitor student work and behavior effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in urban education settings.
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Familiarity with technology in education.
