About the position

The Kindergarten Teaching Assistant plays a vital role in providing an engaging and enriching educational experience for young students. This position involves assisting the lead classroom teacher in instructional support, managing classroom routines, and addressing the personal needs of students, including hygiene and bathroom routines. The assistant is expected to foster a respectful and supportive learning environment while promoting high expectations for student participation and learning.

Responsibilities

• Assist and support the lead classroom teacher in providing instructional support to students.
• Work with small groups of students to reinforce instruction provided by the lead classroom teacher.
• Provide clear and accurate classroom explanations as necessary.
• Provide accurate answers to students' questions and feedback that furthers learning.
• Encourage and model respectful talk, active listening, and turn-taking among students.
• Acknowledge students' backgrounds and lives outside of the classroom.
• Exhibit body language indicative of warmth and caring to students.
• Encourage and model politeness and support for all community members.
• Facilitate smooth functioning classroom routines with little or no loss of instructional time.
• Gather and use evidence of student understanding to assist the lead classroom teacher in informing instruction and remediation.

Requirements

• High School Diploma required.
• Experience working with children in a school or related setting.
• Experience in and/or understanding of the public school system including charter schools is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

• Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field.
• Child Development Associate (CDA) certification.
