About the position

The Controller at KIPP NYC is a key financial leader responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will manage a team of nine and support a growing annual operating budget, currently at $200M and projected to reach $300M by 2030. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can maintain financial controls, manage audits, and provide strategic financial insights while fostering a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting policies and procedures.
  • Maintain general ledger and subsidiary ledgers for financial audit preparation.
  • Manage the monthly closing process and prepare financial statements and cash flow forecasts.
  • Oversee accounts receivables and enhance the revenue cycle to optimize cash flow.
  • Manage grants accounting and ensure expenditures align with grant budgets.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and internal controls to ensure compliance and improve efficiencies.
  • Prepare and submit tax returns and manage the annual audit process.
  • Manage banking relationships and track performance of invested assets.
  • Lead and develop a team of nine accounting professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • 15+ years of accounting and finance experience, including audit coordination and managing accounts payable/receivable.
  • Prior experience as Controller in an organization with a budget of $100M - $300M.
  • Experience in non-profit accounting or in educational institutions is strongly preferred.
  • Strong track record in grants management related to compliance and reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with experience presenting to senior management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Sage Intacct or similar accounting software.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to build systems.
