About the position

The Katie Miller & Gateway Special Education Teacher position at the McNabb Center is dedicated to addressing the individual educational needs of clients at the Katie Miller & Gateway Academy. This role is crucial for students identified with Special Education certification and those with 504 plans. The teacher will be responsible for developing lesson plans tailored to the unique needs of each student, delegating tasks to assistants, and reporting progress to the Program Coordinator. Participation in treatment planning for residents is essential, as is the utilization of the behavioral system employed at the facility. The teacher must meet or exceed the expectations set by the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) and the Department of Education to maintain school certification. Additionally, the position requires acting as the Educational Liaison, which involves completing education reports and communicating with school liaison personnel as directed by the Interdepartmental Agreement between DCS and the Department of Education. The working environment for this position is within a residential facility, where the teacher will provide educational services that include developing a curriculum that meets the Department of Education's standards. This includes providing 6.5 hours of approved curriculum each school day, grading assignments, and maintaining accurate records of student progress. The teacher will also be responsible for providing Special Education services, including the development and review of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students. Classroom management is a key responsibility, ensuring that the learning environment is structured and conducive to the educational needs of the clients. In addition to educational responsibilities, the teacher will also need to meet DCS/DOE regulations for maintaining school certification and funding, oversee the utilization of Title I funding, and organize school activities that align with treatment services. Professionalism is paramount, requiring clear communication with all parties involved in a client's treatment and maintaining a high standard of professional development through required trainings and workshops. The position demands a commitment to the educational and therapeutic needs of the clients, ensuring that they receive the support necessary for their academic and personal growth.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized lesson plans for students with special needs.
  • Provide 6.5 hours of approved DOE curriculum each school day, including daily assignments for each student.
  • Grade and record student progress, providing reports to parents, therapists, and caseworkers as required by the Department of Education.
  • Complete transcripts documenting credits towards graduation within 2 weeks of course completion.
  • Provide Special Education services and complete initial IEPs within the first 30 days, reviewing them every 45 days thereafter.
  • Maintain classroom structure conducive to learning and monitor individual modifications as needed.
  • Assist in completing all school approval forms and meet DCS/DOE expectations in a timely manner.
  • Supervise and coordinate Wellness and Living skills as part of the school day.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation according to Title I standards.
  • Provide academic and behavioral reports to treatment teams and caseworkers.
  • Act as a liaison between school systems and assist with community integration for clients.
  • Provide professional written and verbal communication to all parties involved in a client's treatment.
  • Attend all required trainings to maintain licensure and improve job performance.

Requirements

  • Possess a teaching certificate in the state of Tennessee.
  • Must have a current special education certificate.
  • Experience in a clinical setting is required.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Experience working with children, youth, and families is necessary.
  • Understanding of educational expectations of DCS/DOE and Title I/TACF is preferred.
