About the position

The Knowledge Commons Desk Staff position at the University of Utah Health is designed for current students who are looking to gain valuable experience while serving their peers in the Marriott Library's central service point for technology and reference assistance. This role involves working collaboratively with a team of students and library staff to provide essential support to students, faculty, and staff in various areas, including library services, research assistance, and technology support. The Knowledge Commons is a dynamic environment where staff will engage with users to answer questions related to campus and library services, assist with research inquiries, and provide guidance on computer software and equipment usage. In this position, staff will be responsible for offering technology assistance, which includes helping users access electronic journals and research databases, providing support for printing and scanning, and assisting with the setup of wireless laptops and classroom media equipment. Additionally, the role encompasses equipment circulation, poster printing, and cashiering services. The Knowledge Commons Desk Staff will play a crucial role in ensuring that library patrons receive the help they need in a timely and efficient manner, contributing to a positive user experience within the library. Candidates for this position must be current University of Utah students enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. The role requires regular and predictable attendance, and part-time employees are generally expected to limit their work to library employment only, unless an exception is granted. Responsibilities

  • Serve students, staff, and faculty in the Knowledge Commons by providing technology assistance and library information.
  • Assist with basic research inquiries, including accessing electronic journals and research databases.
  • Support users with printing, scanning, and various software applications.
  • Help with wireless laptop setup and classroom media equipment.
  • Manage equipment circulation, poster printing, and cashiering services.

Requirements

  • Must be a current University of Utah student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Basic knowledge of Windows and Mac computers, printing, Microsoft Office, web browsers, peripherals, and media equipment.
  • Good communication skills and customer service ability.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues independently and collaboratively with coworkers, supervisors, and librarians.
