About the position

The KPBS Public Matters Editor plays a crucial role in shaping the editorial and engagement vision of the Public Matters Democracy team, which is dedicated to fostering civic engagement and thoughtful discussions within the San Diego and Imperial County communities. This initiative aims to engage audiences around elections and civic issues, ensuring that KPBS remains a vital source of information and representation for diverse voices in the region. The editor will work under the supervision of the Managing Editor and will be responsible for overseeing the production of content that is not only informative but also engaging and reflective of the community's needs and perspectives. The Public Matters Editor will lead efforts to ensure that KPBS is deeply embedded in the communities it serves, expanding its reach and representation in areas where it currently lacks a strong presence. This involves collaborating with various departments within KPBS to create a mix of thought-provoking stories, explainers, and multimedia content that resonates with audiences across all platforms. The editor will also supervise the Public Matters Social Media Host/Reporter and Investigative Reporter, ensuring a steady stream of content that prioritizes audience engagement and accountability-driven journalism. In addition to content creation, the editor will be responsible for developing key performance indicators to measure the success of the initiative, directing digital and community engagement efforts, and managing relationships with external partners. The role requires a strong commitment to democracy and civic engagement, with an emphasis on understanding the factors that drive public participation and engagement. The editor will also contribute to the overall mission of KPBS by ensuring that the news division provides fair, accurate, and contextualized reports on issues that matter to the community.
