About the position

Kennedy Valve is seeking a dedicated Automation Engineer to join our team in Elmira, New York. This position is crucial for bringing new strategies and visions to life by evaluating and validating all outcomes that improve production efficiency. The Automation Engineer will be responsible for proving feasibility and creating actionable plans that lead to sustainable business improvements through innovation, design, tactical planning, and implementation. This role requires a strong focus on project management, manufacturing automation, and collaboration with various departments to ensure the successful execution of projects. In this role, the Automation Engineer will coordinate and effectively communicate with stakeholders to design, manage, plan, procure, and implement manufacturing production projects within sustainable budgeted goals. The engineer will lead the team in studying and implementing best automation practices, particularly in Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming, implementation, and debugging. Additionally, the engineer will implement machine vision solutions for the automation of robotics and inspection processes, working closely with Production Management, Engineering, and Quality Assurance to drive continual improvements in CNC machining operations. The position also involves working on manufacturing floor layout and simulations, as well as mentoring engineering students through project study and implementation opportunities. The Automation Engineer will have the opportunity to engage with various departments, including Finishing and Foundry, to enhance overall operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and communicate with stakeholders to design, manage, plan, procure, and implement manufacturing production projects.
  • Lead the team in studying and implementing best automation practices.
  • Program, implement, and debug Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Implement machine vision solutions for automation of robotics and inspection processes.
  • Collaborate with Production Management, Engineering, and Quality Assurance for continual improvements in CNC machining operations.
  • Conduct manufacturing floor layout and simulations.
  • Teach and coach engineering students through project study and implementation opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in project management within a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Proficiency in applicable engineering software (e.g., SolidWorks and/or other CAD Software).
  • Experience with automation simulation software (e.g., Roboguide, Simio, Keyence simulation software, etc.).
  • Ability to write robotic language communication, primarily using Fanuc Handling Tool.
  • Experience creating custom PLC programs from scratch and modifying/debugging existing programs, preferably Allen Bradley PLC.
  • Experience with machine vision including Fanuc 2D, Fanuc 3D, Keyence 2D, Keyence 3D, and Bin Picking.
