About the position

The Lab Assistant-Microbiology position at Baton Rouge General involves performing essential pre-analytic test phases under the supervision of licensed medical professionals. The role includes specimen collection, labeling, delivery, and conducting waived laboratory tests while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The assistant is expected to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, adhere to corporate compliance, and actively participate in performance improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood and specimens from patients according to departmental protocol and policy.
  • Accessions patient samples into the laboratory computer system and distributes to the technical departments for analysis.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the principles of phlebotomy and accessioning.
  • Follows established safety policies regarding biohazard and sharp exposure.
  • Practices appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control procedures.
  • Maintains recollects at or below 2% benchmark.
  • Maintains accurate patient identification in phlebotomy, accessioning, pre-analytic and designated analytic areas of the laboratory.
  • Maintains good performance in blood culture collection.
  • Performs accurate and timely plating of cultures according to departmental protocol.
  • Performs and reports accurate designated waived testing in a timely fashion.
  • Performs specimen loading on designated equipment under direction of MLT or MT.
  • Performs other duties approved by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science.
  • Current Lab Assistant license through LASBME or MLT/MT degree required.
  • Demonstrated CRT/computer knowledge.
  • Ability to handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety practices in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques and methods of sterilization.
