About the position

The Lab Research Analyst I position at Duke University School of Medicine involves conducting a variety of investigations in the planning, development, and implementation of experimental procedures within the overall scope of a research project. The role is integral to supporting research-oriented activities and requires a comprehensive understanding of laboratory techniques and procedures. The analyst will perform a variety of technical duties, including conducting physical, chemical, or biological tests and experiments to obtain data that supports the research objectives of the principal investigator. This includes compiling and documenting procedures and results to ensure accurate record-keeping and data integrity. In this role, the analyst will operate laboratory equipment necessary for specific tests and perform laboratory work that supports the research activities of the lab. A significant aspect of the job involves maintaining an animal colony, specifically mice, and performing various laboratory animal handling and surgical skills. This includes administering intraperitoneal and intravenous injections, conducting intracranial tumor implantations, and monitoring animals post-surgery. The analyst will also engage in pharmacokinetic studies, live animal imaging, and in situ brain perfusions, as well as maintaining laboratory animal protocols and collecting tissue samples for research purposes. The position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to exercise judgment in following established practices and procedures. The individual should be proactive in planning and executing daily tasks and should be capable of collaborating effectively with colleagues. Additionally, the analyst may assist in preparing proposals, manuscripts, procedures, and guidelines documents, contributing to the overall success of the research team.

Responsibilities

• Conduct a variety of investigations in the planning, development, and implementation of experimental procedures.
• Perform physical, chemical, or biological tests and experiments to obtain data in support of research activities.
• Compile and document procedures and results accurately.
• Operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
• Maintain an animal colony (mice) and perform laboratory animal handling and surgical skills.
• Administer intraperitoneal and intravenous injections and conduct intracranial tumor implantations.
• Monitor animals post-surgery and conduct pharmacokinetic studies.
• Engage in live animal imaging and in situ brain perfusions.
• Maintain laboratory animal protocols and collect tissue samples for research purposes.
• Prepare mouse tissue and specimens for immunohistochemistry procedures.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure it is in good working order.
• Assist with the preparation of proposals, manuscripts, procedures, and guidelines documents.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology, or other directly related scientific field.
• Two years of research experience, or a related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis.
