About the position

The Laboratory Section Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing daily laboratory operations in the Microbiology and Molecular departments at Orlando Health. This role ensures quality performance levels are maintained and compliance with regulations is upheld. The manager will also be involved in staff planning, training, and development, as well as managing departmental policies and budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor laboratory operations daily to ensure quality performance and compliance with regulations.
  • Enroll and participate in appropriate proficiency programs for all services performed.
  • Ensure the effectiveness of the quality control program and take corrective actions when necessary.
  • Oversee staff planning and scheduling to meet service demands, ensuring qualified staff are scheduled based on services required.
  • Provide orientation and training to personnel, assessing and improving their competence.
  • Encourage staff self-development and learning.
  • Manage personnel functions according to corporate HR guidelines, including hiring, counseling, and separation of employees.
  • Implement and maintain a performance management program for the laboratory, including training, evaluating competencies, and coaching plans.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures for resource utilization and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with planning and developing departmental operational goals and evaluating current and future technology within the laboratory.
  • Prepare and evaluate requests for proposals for new technology and oversee its implementation.
  • Prepare and maintain capital and operational budgets, ensuring the department operates within budgetary constraints.
  • Report financial variances and ensure the laboratory performance improvement plan is implemented.

Requirements

  • HT Certification CT (ASCP)
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Five years of clinical laboratory experience, including one year of supervisory experience
  • Computer skills, including knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS)
  • Current license as a Supervisor in the specialty required by the laboratory section in the State of Florida.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with process improvement indicators and customer requirements
  • Familiarity with vendor contract negotiations and cost containment measures
