The Lab Support Technician, CRA position at Boston Medical Center is a part-time role responsible for providing quality laboratory services, including specimen collection and processing. The technician will perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and assist in training less experienced staff. This role requires effective communication with patients and staff to ensure high-quality service and adherence to laboratory protocols.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy and EKGs as required.
• Stock phlebotomy workstations and trays with essential supplies.
• Positively identify all patients and specimens to eliminate mislabeling risks.
• Perform venipunctures according to NCCLS specifications.
• Label specimens according to procedures and laboratory policies.
• Collect timed specimens and blood cultures according to policies and procedures.
• Understand study protocols and process specimens accordingly.
• Prepare the workstation with essential supplies for smooth specimen processing.
• Receive and verify identification of specimens according to laboratory policies.
• Distribute specimens to appropriate lab sections within specific time frames.
• Centrifuge and aliquot specimens, following special handling instructions.
• Process, prepare, and store specimens for send out to reference laboratories.
• Monitor and record daily temperatures and perform scheduled maintenance of equipment.
• Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and phone customers to improve patient services.
• Establish positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers.
• Deliver reports in a timely fashion and respect confidentiality rules.
• Complete all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred.
• One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience preferred.
