About the position

The Lab Tech Assistant at Clermont Hospital plays a crucial role in the laboratory by performing various duties essential for the preparation and analysis of specimens. This position involves registering and accessioning orders, verifying the acceptability of specimens, and executing established pre-analytical and analytical laboratory procedures. The Lab Tech Assistant is also responsible for performing phlebotomy and specimen collection, ensuring that all processes adhere to established protocols to maintain specimen integrity. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Lab Tech Assistant will assist in maintaining inventory, stocking supplies, conducting waived testing, and preparing slides for analysis. Customer service is a key component of this role, as the Lab Tech Assistant is expected to greet patients and the community with respect and professionalism. The position requires the collection of blood specimens from patients, following established venipuncture procedures, and transporting these specimens to the testing laboratory. The Lab Tech Assistant will provide support to technologists by assisting with the loading and maintenance of laboratory instruments, preparing reagents, and managing blood products. Recognizing and reporting instrument malfunctions is also part of the job, ensuring that any issues are communicated to the appropriate personnel promptly. In addition to technical skills, the Lab Tech Assistant must possess strong problem-solving abilities and be able to perform clerical duties related to the department, such as checking inventory and answering phones when necessary. This role may require travel to off-site locations, adding to the dynamic nature of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare specimens for analysis by registering and accessioning orders.
  • Verify specimen acceptability and perform established pre-analytical and analytical laboratory procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection according to established procedures.
  • Collect blood specimens from patients and transport specimens to the testing laboratory.
  • Assist technologists with loading and maintaining instruments, making up reagents, thawing, pooling, importing, and issuing blood products.
  • Recognize instrument and equipment malfunctions and inform appropriate personnel of issues and resolutions.
  • Perform departmental-related clerical duties such as checking inventory and stocking supplies.
  • Provide excellent customer service by greeting patients and the community respectfully.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or GED (required).
  • Associates in Biology or Chemistry (preferred).
  • Laboratory experience preferred, but not required.
  • Keyboarding or data experience preferred, but not required.
  • Phlebotomy experience (preferred).
  • Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Engage with staff and patients in a professional manner.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
