About the position

The Labor and Delivery Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the Perioperative team by ensuring high levels of service and professionalism in the Labor and Delivery department. This per diem position involves assisting with patient care during various stages of labor and delivery, maintaining aseptic techniques, and ensuring a safe and clean environment for patients and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assists RNs with appropriate nursing care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and surgical patients.
  • Accurately obtains vital signs, weights, and I & Os, and documents on appropriate tools.
  • Answers call bells promptly and courteously.
  • Assists in appropriate positions for surgical procedures.
  • Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
  • Demonstrates and maintains aseptic technique during surgical procedures and when setting up the delivery table.
  • Demonstrates competency in pain management by reporting patients' pain intensity to staff nurse.
  • Demonstrates competency in restraint management and application.
  • Follows proper safety and infection control procedures and maintains a safe work environment.
  • Identifies criteria for selecting methods of disinfection and/or sterilization by following manufacturer recommendations.
  • Inspects instrument wrappers for integrity and expiration.
  • Keeps the patient care area neat and clean.
  • Prepares soiled instruments for Central Supply processing appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Properly collects, processes specimen logbook/labeling, and transports specimens to the lab or morgue.
  • Properly puts away sterile instruments upon delivery from Central Supply Processing.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Safely transfers patients as needed from bed to wheelchair to stretcher, etc., and maintains proper body mechanics.
  • Stocks triage and labor rooms, operating rooms, fetal monitoring carts, warmers, and shelves in the sub sterile room as needed.
  • Provides a compassionate and supportive environment with prompt and consistent service.
  • Adheres to patient rights and provides for the confidential treatment of all communications and records.
  • Demonstrates professionalism with families, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Listens and communicates effectively.
  • Supports teamwork by cooperative problem solving through participation in meetings and projects.
  • Utilizes principles of continuous quality improvement in all work situations to assess, measure, and improve organizational and department functions.
  • Organizes work, sets priorities with a minimum of supervision, and seeks guidance as appropriate.
  • Makes timely decisions consistent with department objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and accepts constructive criticism.
  • Participates in ongoing education as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a surgical tech program.
  • Surgical Tech certification.
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
