The Center for Blood Oxygen Transport and Hemostasis at the University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a Laboratory Animal Research Assistant to join Dr. Iqbal Hamza's lab. This position is integral to the lab's mission of understanding heme homeostasis in humans, which is crucial for developing nutritional strategies to combat iron deficiency anemia. The Laboratory Animal Research Assistant will engage in a variety of laboratory-related tasks, including ordering supplies, bookkeeping, and performing technical procedures involving rodent and aquatic species. The role requires conducting biochemical, molecular, cellular, and genetic experiments, as well as handling radioisotopes and chemicals. The assistant will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records of laboratory experiments and compiling results for publication. Participation in weekly laboratory meetings and journal clubs is expected, along with assisting the Principal Investigator (PI) in preparing publications and grant proposals. The primary duties of the Laboratory Animal Research Assistant include performing animal research activities and providing clinical care in compliance with animal welfare regulations and guidelines. This includes routine laboratory maintenance, daily health observations of animals, collection of biological specimens, and reporting health outcomes to the veterinarian. The assistant will also be involved in advanced laboratory research activities, such as blood collection, animal surgeries, and post-operative care. Additionally, the role may involve compiling and analyzing research data using relevant software, assisting with literature research, and preparing manuscripts and scientific illustrations for publication. Administrative duties may also be part of the role, including training students and other technicians, developing laboratory policies, and ordering supplies.
