About the position

The Laboratory Assistant at Geisinger Medical Laboratories plays a crucial role in providing high-quality laboratory services by processing patient specimens and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This position involves assessing, accessioning, and preparing specimens for testing, while maintaining accurate records and managing inquiries related to specimen collection and results. The role is essential for supporting the laboratory's mission of exceptional patient care through innovation and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Assess, accession, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing.
• Safely handle potentially infectious blood, body fluids, and other patient specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
• Assess suitability and acceptability of patient specimens and reject unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
• Match order information with specimen information to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
• Accession and result specimens according to procedure via appropriate computer application.
• Correctly assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers.
• Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
• Prepare specimens as appropriate including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
• Deliver prepared specimens to appropriate testing area in a timely manner.
• Apply laboratory internet programs to store specimens and to locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing as requested.
• Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental assigned duties.
• Manage phone inquiries and provide information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results as appropriate.
• Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
• Assist with packaging ordering and referral of specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation and commercial carrier regulations as required.
• Troubleshoot missing specimens and other preanalytical errors including courier log review and specimen archives.
• Maintain equipment, participate in established preventative maintenance program, and alert supervisor of any equipment problems.
• Assist in proper handling, storage, and maintenance of supplies, notifying supervisor when inventory is low.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
• Experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.
