About the position

The Laboratory Assistant at Geisinger Medical Laboratories plays a crucial role in providing high-quality laboratory services by processing and managing patient specimens. This position involves ensuring the accuracy and safety of specimen handling, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and supporting the overall mission of exceptional patient care through innovative laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, accession, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing.
  • Safely handle potentially infectious blood, body fluids, and other patient specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Assess suitability and acceptability of patient specimens and reject unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
  • Match order information with specimen information to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Accession and result specimens according to procedure via appropriate computer application.
  • Correctly assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers.
  • Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
  • Prepare specimens as appropriate including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  • Deliver prepared specimens to appropriate testing area in a timely manner.
  • Apply laboratory internet programs to store specimens and to locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing as requested.
  • Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and departmental assigned duties.
  • Manage phone inquiries and provide information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results as appropriate.
  • Assist with packaging ordering and referral of specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation and commercial carrier regulations.
  • Troubleshoot missing specimens and other preanalytical errors including courier log review and specimen archives.
  • Maintain equipment, participate in established preventative maintenance program, and alert supervisor of any equipment problems.
  • Assist in proper handling, storage, and maintenance of supplies, notifying supervisor when inventory is low.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
