About the position

The Laboratory Assistant II at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is responsible for performing various laboratory support procedures, including phlebotomy and specimen processing in clinical and anatomical pathology areas. This full-time position requires practical knowledge of laboratory procedures and support functions, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

• Perform assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including collecting patient information and verifying identification.
• Conduct blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
• Maintain general equipment, perform function checks, and document maintenance activities.
• Receive and process patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting samples as needed.
• Accession surgical cases and set up cultures for testing.
• Perform blood and blood component processing, including storage and shipping using a validated Transfusion Information System.
• Conduct periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures on laboratory instruments.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces and laboratory equipment.
• Assist in training new staff and students, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
• Provide resolution to customer service issues and support education to clinical staff.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Basic Life Support - CPR Certification required.
• Six months of relevant healthcare experience preferred.
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

• Technical skills related to laboratory procedures or processes.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Ability to handle infectious biological specimens and hazardous materials safely.
