About the position

The Laboratory Assistant II at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is responsible for performing various laboratory support procedures, including phlebotomy and specimen processing in clinical and anatomical pathology areas. This full-time night shift position requires practical knowledge of laboratory procedures and support functions, ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory while adhering to safety and compliance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including collecting patient information and verifying identification.
  • Conduct blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
  • Receive and process patient specimens, including centrifugation and transportation.
  • Aliquot different sample types and load preanalytical instruments or deliver them to the testing department.
  • Perform cytopreparatory staining and accession surgical cases requiring anatomical knowledge.
  • Set up cultures and inoculate petri dishes for bacterial growth.
  • Process, store, and ship blood and blood components using a validated Transfusion Information System.
  • Conduct preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory equipment and spaces.
  • Assist in training new staff and students, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
  • Provide resolution to customer service issues and support education to clinical staff.
  • Participate in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
  • Adhere to safety policies and handle hazardous waste appropriately.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Certification required.
  • Technical skills related to laboratory procedures or processes.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to read and comprehend text and numbers in English.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program.
  • Six months of relevant healthcare experience.
