About the position

The Laboratory Assistant II Relief position at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission involves performing various laboratory support procedures, including phlebotomy and specimen processing. This role is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory functions and requires adherence to safety and compliance standards. The position is part-time, working every other Saturday during the day shift, and is designed for individuals who are committed to providing high-quality support in a healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including collecting patient information and verifying identification.
• Conduct blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
• Maintain general equipment, perform function checks, and document maintenance activities.
• Receive and process patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting samples as needed.
• Accession surgical cases and set up cultures for testing.
• Perform blood and blood component processing, including storage and shipping.
• Conduct periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures on laboratory instruments.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces and laboratory equipment.
• Assist with clerical duties, including answering phones and supporting laboratory management with special projects.
• Train new staff and students, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
• Participate in laboratory performance improvement activities and support education for clinical staff.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Basic Life Support - CPR Certification required.
• Technical skills related to laboratory procedures preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

• Six months of relevant healthcare experience preferred.
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.
