About the position

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) is seeking a part-time Laboratory Director to oversee the operations of its laboratory. This position is primarily remote, based in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont, with an expectation of travel to the Barre, VT lab up to three times per year. The Laboratory Director will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and professional standards, particularly those outlined in the CLIA Regulations for high complexity laboratories. The Laboratory Director will actively engage in the overall administration of the lab, providing onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed. This role includes ensuring that all laboratory personnel perform their duties effectively and that clinical supervision is provided. The director will also be responsible for developing and implementing policies, processes, and procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality testing services. A quality system approach will be essential to provide accurate, reliable, and timely patient test results, which includes ongoing monitoring of testing processes, corrective actions, and evaluating their effectiveness. Additionally, the Laboratory Director will ensure that the lab participates in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program and that all conditions for enrollment and testing of samples are met according to CLIA Regulations. The director will oversee the adequacy of the lab's physical and environmental conditions, ensuring a safe working environment for personnel and compliance with safety and biohazard requirements. The role also involves ensuring that the lab employs sufficient qualified personnel and that new test procedures are properly documented and followed by lab staff.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for and actively involved in the overall operation and administration of the Lab.
  • Provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed to Lab personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and professional standards, including CLIA Regulations.
  • Provide clinical supervision for Lab personnel and ensure all duties are properly performed.
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, and procedures for consistent, high-quality testing services.
  • Implement a quality system approach to laboratory services testing for accurate and reliable patient test results.
  • Monitor each testing process to identify errors or potential problems and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Ensure the Lab is enrolled in an HHS-approved proficiency testing program and meets all CLIA requirements.
  • Oversee the adequacy of the Lab's physical and environmental conditions for testing.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for Lab personnel, free from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
  • Ensure sufficient numbers of qualified personnel are employed to perform tests and report results accurately.
  • Review and include new test procedures in the Lab's procedure manual.

Requirements

  • Must be qualified to manage and direct laboratory personnel and high complexity tests as per CLIA regulations.
  • Must possess a current license as a laboratory director issued by the State of Vermont.
  • Excellent complex problem-solving skills are required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and competency within a laboratory environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Competency in using computer hardware, lab information systems, and automated test instruments is required.
  • Strong customer service skills to meet the individual needs of customers.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize workload effectively.
  • Superb attention to detail and ability to follow processes and procedures within established timelines.
  • Ability to handle discreet, confidential information appropriately.
  • Desire to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
