About The Position

The Genetic Counselor (GC) at Children's Mercy will assist the Genetics Laboratory Directors in various duties, including data analysis, interpretation of genetic test results, and ensuring proper test utilization. The role involves providing educational guidance to laboratory and clinical staff, overseeing process improvements for genetic test ordering, and procuring insurance pre-approval for tests. The GC will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of genetic services provided to patients and families.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling
  • 3-5 years of experience in genetic counseling
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification
  • Required MS in Genetic Counseling

Responsibilities

  • Assist in data analysis and interpretation of genetic test results.
  • Evaluate test orders to ensure proper test utilization and management.
  • Provide clinical laboratory testing consultation to hospital staff.
  • Analyze laboratory data and input report information into the laboratory information system.
  • Provide billing information to providers, including pricing and CPT codes.
  • Guide and educate staff on order placement within the hospital information system.
  • Review provider orders and contact them to ensure criteria are met for test requests.
  • Select appropriate referral laboratories for genetic testing.
  • Review relevant literature related to genetic counseling and medical genetics testing.
  • Review, interpret, and initiate genetic test results in conjunction with clinical information.
  • Consult with healthcare providers to obtain necessary clinical information for test interpretation.
  • Recommend additional testing or genetic counseling when appropriate.
