About the position

The Laboratory Instrument Making Machinist Foreman at the University of Virginia is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Physics Machine Shop, ensuring high standards of quality and precision in the fabrication of research-grade equipment. This role involves managing a team of machinists, coordinating workloads, and providing technical expertise to support research projects. The foreman plays a critical role in maintaining safety standards and fostering a collaborative environment for both staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Laboratory Instrument Making Machine Shop and oversee daily activities of machinists.
  • Manage performance processes, including reviewing and approving time and leave requests.
  • Recruit and hire new Laboratory Instrument Making Machinists.
  • Effectively manage and schedule work requests to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure the Student Shop course is taught effectively and safely.
  • Develop processes for coordinating workloads efficiently.
  • Collaborate with machinists to solve advanced technical problems.
  • Maintain records and manage supply and equipment resources.
  • Inspect finished projects for quality assurance.
  • Fabricate research-grade equipment, often requiring innovative techniques.
  • Work from sketches, blueprints, and verbal instructions.
  • Operate CNC mills and lathes to close tolerances.
  • Fit and assemble parts for complex projects.
  • Assist customers with equipment design and ensure safety practices are followed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Machinist Associate's Degree or equivalent technical discipline preferred.
  • Seven years of journey-level experience in machining.
  • Five years of supervisory and leadership experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least four years of experience in a similar shop environment (e.g., research and development, model shop).
  • Experience in procurement of specialty materials and supplies.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD Software.
  • Expertise in TIG, MIG, and laser welding.
  • Experience as a Tool and Die Maker, Model Maker, or R&D Machinist.
