About the position

The position involves overseeing the daily operations of a landfill laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The role includes managing laboratory personnel, implementing waste analysis plans, and advising on waste treatment methodologies. The individual will also be responsible for maintaining quality control and facilitating audits, while ensuring a safe and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all laboratory personnel, data, and quality control in compliance with facility SSPs and SSMPs.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with standard laboratory practices and facility documents.
  • Implement waste analysis plan and RCRA regulations as they pertain to laboratory analysis and testing.
  • Review waste acceptance packets to determine acceptability for hazardous waste management.
  • Facilitate the receipt of wastes for treatment and disposal in compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Advise site management on appropriate treatment and disposal methodologies for specific waste.
  • Oversee personnel needs of the laboratory including selecting, coaching, and training employees.
  • Provide input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Coordinate services with other operations supervisors/managers and keep them informed of issues.
  • Keep facility management informed of problems or matters requiring attention.
  • Make personal contact with customers to assist with questions or concerns.
  • Ensure employee health and safety, cleanliness, and organization of the laboratory work area.
  • Conduct and contribute to regular meetings to maintain favorable working relationships.
  • Provide training and presentations in a positive and professional manner.
  • Update and submit required reports in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate internal and external lab audits and resolve findings.
  • Calibrate and maintain lab instruments, utilizing a laboratory information management system.
  • Assist and advise staff in waste discrepancy resolution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a High School Diploma/GED with four years of relevant work experience.
  • Seven years of relevant work experience in addition to the education requirement.
  • Ability to complete a 24-hour HAZWOPER course.
  • Ability to pass a pulmonary function test and use a respirator.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate employees.
