About the position

The Laboratory Manager for the Molecular Biology & Genetics department at Cornell University is responsible for overseeing lab operations related to the teaching of the BIOMG 2801 Laboratory in Genetics and Genomics. This role involves managing laboratory preparations, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed while fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion within the lab environment.

Responsibilities

• Manage preparation, set-up, and clean-up for teaching labs and classes.
• Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Technician I assistant.
• Manage and maintain the preparation rooms, lab and classroom space, and equipment.
• Maintain Drosophila and microbial stocks and prepare media for these organisms.
• Ensure that all laboratory materials, protocols, and procedures adhere to safety requirements.
• Establish, troubleshoot, and document protocols for lab experiments.
• Assist with Drosophila fly collections.
• Assist graduate student Teaching Assistants with Drosophila fly collections.
• Maintain inventory and order supplies.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
• Ability to work independently.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to prioritize while multi-tasking.
• Familiarity with computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and online ordering.
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

• Supervisory experience.
• Four or more years of laboratory experience.
