About the position

The Laboratory Manager will oversee the daily operations of the Research Laboratory at Charles R. Drew University, supporting investigators, collaborators, and students by providing training and technical expertise. The role involves managing laboratory equipment, developing standard operating protocols, and implementing a recharge center model for shared research facilities. The manager will also ensure compliance with safety standards and assist in grant preparation and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop standard operating protocols and manage overall function for the core laboratory.
  • Implement a new laboratory management system (Agilent iLab) for all specialized equipment.
  • Manage and maintain major equipment within the core laboratory.
  • Provide equipment operation as a service as per individual researcher's intended use.
  • Develop and implement a recharge center model for shared research facilities.
  • Provide instruction and training in core equipment operation to new users.
  • Establish and maintain the core laboratory inventory, generating weekly reports to the PI and Chief.
  • Manage routine maintenance procedures and emergency repair situations.
  • Acquire knowledge of new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • Assist new PIs with lab start-up, including arranging moving and shipments of items.
  • Maintain lab safety standards and safety training, including conducting regular laboratory safety audits.
  • Manage negotiations and contracts for the use of core facilities by CDU and other outside interests.
  • Establish efficient arrangement and use of laboratory space.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics, or a related field (Master's or PhD preferred).
  • Experience with high throughput molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to analyze Next Generation Sequencing data using open source or licensed software (preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize priorities in the organization of workflow.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in performing DNA and RNA extractions on various sample types.
  • Experience with next-generation short read sequencing.
