About the position

The position involves overseeing laboratory operations to ensure quality testing services across all phases of laboratory testing. The role requires managing quality control and assurance programs, ensuring compliance with proficiency testing regulations, and maintaining a safe laboratory environment. The individual will also be responsible for supervising laboratory personnel and ensuring they are adequately trained and competent in their roles.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance including preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic phases.
  • Maintain appropriate physical plant and environmental conditions for testing.
  • Select test methodologies that provide quality results for patient care.
  • Verify procedures to determine accuracy and precision of testing methods.
  • Ensure laboratory personnel perform test methods accurately and reliably.
  • Enroll the laboratory in an HHS approved proficiency-testing program and ensure compliance with testing requirements.
  • Review proficiency testing reports to evaluate laboratory performance and identify corrective actions.
  • Manage quality control and quality assurance programs to assure quality of laboratory services.
  • Establish acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system.
  • Document remedial actions for significant deviations from established performance characteristics.
  • Monitor test result reports for pertinent information required for interpretation.
  • Provide consultation to clients regarding test results and their interpretation.
  • Ensure on-site supervision of high complexity test performance by qualified personnel.
  • Employ sufficient laboratory personnel with appropriate education and experience.
  • Ensure personnel receive appropriate training and demonstrate reliability in testing operations.
  • Enforce policies for monitoring competency of individuals conducting testing phases.
  • Maintain an approved procedure manual for all personnel involved in testing processes.
  • Specify responsibilities and duties of consultants, supervisors, and testing personnel.

Requirements

  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy licensed to practice medicine in Tennessee.
  • Certification in anatomic or clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology or equivalent qualifications.
  • At least two years directing or supervising high complexity laboratory testing, or 20 continuing medical education credit hours in laboratory practice, or equivalent laboratory training during medical residency.
  • Doctoral degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, and certification by relevant boards.
