About the position

The Laboratory Microbiologist position at the Department of Health/Mental Hygiene involves performing laboratory testing on specimens from patients in various health clinics. The role is crucial for supporting public health initiatives, particularly in sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing, and includes responsibilities such as supervising laboratory staff, maintaining quality control, and developing laboratory policies. Responsibilities

  • Perform STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory and quality control testing in the STI Comprehensive Laboratories.
  • Supervise, train, assign work to, and evaluate work performance of staff performing STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory tests.
  • Maintain a program of quality control and participate in a program of quality assurance.
  • Advise staff on appropriate methods and techniques and assist in troubleshooting any issues.
  • Order and maintain an adequate stock of media, reagents, and other supplies.
  • Prepare, label, package, and standardize laboratory media, reagents, controls, and specimens for use in analyses.
  • Assist in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Prepare correspondence and narrative/statistical reports.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor or Lab Director.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences.
  • One year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties.
  • Eligibility for a New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
