About the position

The Associate Laboratory Microbiologist will perform laboratory testing on specimens from patients at various clinics under the Bureau of Public Health Clinics (BPHC). This role involves supervising staff, maintaining quality control, and ensuring the effective operation of laboratory services that support public health initiatives in New York City.

Responsibilities

• Perform STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory and quality control testing in the STI Comprehensive Laboratories.
• Supervise, train, assign work to, and evaluate work performance of staff performing STAT moderately complex clinical laboratory tests.
• Maintain a program of quality control and participate in a program of quality assurance.
• Advise staff on appropriate methods and techniques and assist in troubleshooting any issues.
• Order and maintain an adequate stock of media, reagents, and other supplies.
• Prepare, label, package, and standardize laboratory media, reagents, controls, and specimens for use in analyses.
• Assist in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
• Prepare correspondence and narrative/statistical reports.
• Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor or Lab Director.

Requirements

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in medical technology or in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties.
• Ninety college credits from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by specific coursework in chemistry and biology, and one year of laboratory experience at the technologist level.
