About the position

The Laboratory QA Safety Coordinator for the Blood Bank at Cooper University Health Care is responsible for coordinating quality improvement and assurance activities to ensure safe patient care and compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves developing and maintaining procedure manuals, implementing validation protocols, and managing event reports related to quality initiatives in Transfusion Medicine. Additionally, the position oversees laboratory policies and procedures from a quality and safety perspective, ensuring continuous readiness for regulatory agency guidelines and conducting training for staff.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate quality improvement and assurance activities in the Blood Bank.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory standards (FDA, CAP/AABB, Joint Commission, FACT, NJDOH).
  • Develop and maintain procedure manuals in conjunction with the Medical Director and Manager.
  • Implement validation protocols and conduct internal assessments and competency assessments.
  • Manage event reports and corrective actions related to quality issues.
  • Provide clinical data analyses to monitor Transfusion Medicine quality initiatives.
  • Oversee policies and procedures of the Clinical and Anatomic Laboratory from a quality perspective.
  • Maintain oversight for Continuous Readiness regarding regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Collect and analyze data to gauge laboratory performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Investigate noncompliance events and report findings.
  • Oversee safety training and orientation for newly hired staff and students.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in immunohematology testing and Blood Bank quality systems with progressive supervisory responsibilities.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a clinical laboratory setting with exposure to quality systems and progressive supervisory responsibilities.
  • Bachelor's degree and completion of an accredited medical technology program required.
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 qualification requirements for general supervisor overseeing high complexity testing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification or eligibility as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Specialist certification through ASCP or equivalent preferred.
