About the position

The Laboratory Research Assistant will support cutting-edge research in genetics and molecular biology within the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University. This role involves conducting experimental work, managing animal models, analyzing data, and collaborating with team members to achieve research objectives. The position requires a strong foundation in laboratory techniques and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out experimental work involving wet lab techniques such as microbiology and biochemical assays.
  • Performs dry lab work including data analysis and preparation of figures for data presentation.
  • Manages mouse and other animal models, ensuring proper organization and care.
  • Conducts and reports results of complex experiments, organizes and analyzes data, and may contribute to manuscript preparation or publication.
  • Designs and performs a diverse range of experiments, including molecular biology techniques and cell culture maintenance.
  • Compiles and analyzes patient phenotypic data and literature reviews to support research objectives.
  • Maintains an organized and clean laboratory environment, including cleaning glassware and managing inventory.
  • Assists in ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Works collaboratively with team members to ensure research goals and timelines are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or biological engineering) and 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting; OR Associate's degree and 4 years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills.
  • Possesses a high degree of initiative and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., Gel Electrophoresis, Sanger Sequencing, PCR, RFLP-PCR, DNA and RNA Extraction).
  • Experience associating genetic variants to human disease and disease susceptibility.
  • Experience working with human subject samples.
  • Familiarity with sequence data analysis software (e.g., BioEdit, Sequencher, MEGA).
  • Proficiency in Arabic to support international collaborations.
