About the position

UMBC's Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Research Assistant to assist with investigating the molecular genetics of cell migration and to manage laboratory reagents. The Research Assistant will promote the mission of the department by augmenting high-quality research through their own work directly, as well as by supporting laboratory groups and thereby improving productivity. This role is essential in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of laboratory operations, ensuring that all experiments are conducted in a timely and organized manner. The position is grant-funded, meaning employment is contingent upon award renewal, and it offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant research in the field of molecular genetics. The primary duties of the Research Assistant include maintaining fly stocks, performing routine genetic experiments, maintaining laboratory organization and ordering supplies, overseeing undergraduate workers, performing microdissection of flies, carrying out fluorescent immuno-stainings and microscopy, and employing basic molecular biology techniques. This position requires a proactive approach to laboratory management and a commitment to supporting the research goals of the department. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty and other researchers, contributing to a collaborative and innovative research environment.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Associates degree preferably in a Biological or Chemical Science
  • Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biology or a related field
  • Prior experience working with Drosophila in a lab setting
