About the position

The Laboratory Research Technician will work in a genetics/molecular biology lab, conducting experiments related to chromatin structure and function in the model fungus N. crassa, as well as developing anti-fungal drugs. This role requires independent work as well as collaboration with a research team, focusing on maintaining laboratory operations and ensuring the integrity of research data.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain records of strain collections and durable long-term reagents such as antisera.
  • Independently set up and monitor experiments in progress.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct or recommend solutions to problems associated with experimental design, methods, procedures, and techniques, or equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and/or implement new or modified research methods, procedures, and techniques to meet the unique requirements of assigned research problems.
  • Prepare the schedule for lab community chores by students, staff, and postdocs for completion.
  • Schedule and monitor utilization of laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitor equipment and instrument performance; obtain necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Coordinate ordering and maintain stock of laboratory supplies.
  • Provide technical direction to new lab members and student workers.
  • Monitor work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Instruct others in routine laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provide technical guidance and direction as needed.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data resulting from experimentation.
  • Perform literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.
  • Prepare appropriate and understandable representations of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports and presentation of the research findings.

Requirements

  • Technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
  • Highly competent in molecular biological and/or biochemical methods; skills with nucleic acids and proteins desirable.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaborations with others at different universities, applying critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Editorial skills for preparation of reports.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications, including standard software packages for data analysis and presentation.
