About the position

The Laboratory Safety Specialist at Northwestern University is responsible for administering comprehensive environmental health and safety programs within the academic and research communities. This role focuses on overseeing safety compliance in research laboratories, conducting inspections, performing risk assessments, and promoting safe work practices. The specialist will collaborate with researchers and administrators to develop policies and strategies to mitigate safety hazards, while also providing emergency response support and training.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee safety compliance of research laboratories by inspecting assigned research spaces and documenting findings.
  • Perform risk assessments, hazard analysis, and safety audits to promote safe work practices.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and researchers to integrate safety procedures into laboratory operations.
  • Assist with inspections, sampling, documentation, reporting, and follow-up of cross-functional areas.
  • Serve as a 'First Responder' for HAZMAT and laboratory emergencies on campus.
  • Support the respiratory protection program by conducting fit testing for respirator users.
  • Prepare proposals for new safety products, policies, or training.
  • Interact with non-research personnel to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Participate in training events for Research Safety staff and customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, other physical science or safety program.
  • 2-4 years of experience in research laboratories or safety profession.
  • Physically fit to lift/carry at least 50lbs, walk extensively, and wear chemical protective clothing including respirators or SCBA.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated written and oral presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry, other physical science, or safety program.
  • 4-7 years of experience in a research laboratory or safety profession.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, biological safety or industrial hygiene.
  • Knowledge of EHS safety management systems and reporting metrics.
