About the position

The Laboratory Technician 1 position involves working with additive manufacturing technologies, specifically 3D printers, to support day-to-day operations and collaborate with engineers. The technician will be responsible for operating various types of printers, managing materials, and ensuring quality control throughout the manufacturing process. This role requires familiarity with different printing technologies and software, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and maintain equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for day-to-day equipment operations and scheduling work orders.
  • Setup, operate, and maintain AM center machines to ensure quality products.
  • Perform post-processing functions such as powder removal and visual inspection.
  • Prepare, formulate, and characterize materials for printing.
  • Maintain raw material and supply inventory management.
  • Perform housekeeping and cleanup duties after tasks are completed.
  • Inspect and measure 3D printed parts, collecting data and preparing reports.
  • Ensure accurate tolerances to project data and follow safety rules.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of machines.
  • Record technical data for traceability and quality control.
  • Monitor operational information such as material consumption rates.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues with printers.
  • Coordinate disposal of hazardous materials with Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Adhere to ISO9001 processes and procedures.
  • Develop tools, processes, and training materials for operations.
  • Provide feedback for process improvements in collaboration with engineering.
  • Assist engineers with setup and fabrication of AM machines and parameters.
  • Collaborate with various teams to develop manufacturing solutions.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in an engineering/business discipline or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing operations environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and basic knowledge of GD&T.
  • Proficiency in CAD, CAM, and ERP software.
  • Prior experience with rapid prototyping or 3D printing, especially stereolithography, FDM, and SLS.
  • Experience with basic shop tools and hand tools.
  • Customer service and interaction experience.
  • Good record-keeping and data collection skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic understanding of machine tools (milling, lathe, drill presses, CNC) and heat treating.
  • Basic ordering and shipping experience.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, and quality control techniques.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and 17025 documentation requirements.
  • Experience with part inspection and metrology or quality assurance is a plus.
  • A degree in engineering, science, or technology is strongly preferred.
